Abstract

Difficulty in mastering Biology concepts is often linked to the large amount of material that must be studied, which ultimately leads to a focus on memorization. Additionally, students exhibit a variety of learning styles when studying certain concepts. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between learning styles and students' prior knowledge of basic Biology concepts. Learning styles were measured using the VARK questionnaire, and prior knowledge was assessed through multiple-choice questions on basic Biology. Data analysis was performed using Spearman's correlation. The results showed that none of the learning style dimensions had a significant relationship with students' prior knowledge of Biology (p > 0.05). A significant relationship was found between the Auditory and Read/Write learning styles, as well as a moderate relationship between Auditory and Kinesthetic learning styles. The findings suggest that teaching should not solely be based on individual learning styles but should also consider other factors such as motivation and teaching methods to enhance student learning outcomes
